This week, the Cubs not only ended their losing streak and avoided getting swept again, but they also managed to earn a sweep of their own as they took all three games from the Padres. May was a horrible month for the Cubs, but they finished strong and will look to start June on the right foot against the Giants.
Probable Starters
Game 1
Paul Maholm (4-3, 4.62 ERA) vs. Madison Bumgarner (5-4, 3.14 ERA)
Game 2
Matt Garza (2-3, 4.22 ERA) vs. Matt Cain (5-2, 2.79 ERA)
Game 3
Travis Wood (0-1, 5.94 ERA) vs. Barry Zito (4-2, 3.41 ERA)
Game 4
Jeff Samardzija (5-3, 3.09 ERA) vs. Ryan Vogelsong (3-2, 2.36 ERA)
Series Studs
CHC: Darwin Barney (.625 AVG, 2 HR, 5 RBI)
- Darwin Barney brought the big stick against the Padres. With his two home runs in the series (including the walk-off in game three), Barney has already matched his home run production from last season.
SF: Angel Pagan (.556 AVG)
- It wasn’t about big bats for the Giants against the Diamondbacks; it was about consistency. Pagan hit in all three games of this series, including going 2-4 in both games two and three.
Series Duds
CHC: Joe Mather (.182, 1 SO)
- Mather was unable to join in on the offensive explosion, with the exception of game two where he went 2-3. He did not manage to get a hit in either the first or third games.
SF: Brandon Crawford (.000 AVG, 4 SO)
- The young shortstop had some problems seeing the ball against Arizona. He’d still probably tear up club baseball, though.
