Should there be a change to interleague play? Paul Konerko sure thinks so.
About a month ago, the Crosstown Classic was set to begin at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Konerko wouldn’t oppose a shortened rivalry series.
“It’s been great the way it is, but if it’s a three-game series, you’ll have one team that has the bragging rights for a year…it could add more excitement.”
Then, Konerko went to add on one more request.
“I definitely agree the interleague (rivalry) series shouldn’t take place in May…it seems like a summertime thing.”
Keep in mind, Konerko spewed these thoughts one month ago. And quite frankly, his perspective should be taken seriously.
I happen to like the series meetings being twice a year. It gives both clubs a chance to have home-field advantage.
A three-game series is comprehendible. The appreciation of the rivalry would increase again.
I cannot speak for the other interleague rivalries, but in Chicago, fans aren’t as amped for the Crosstown Classic as in years past. It is disappointing because I still very much look forward to it. I tend to engage with a few Chicago Cubs fans on who’s the best Chicago team.
But if it was to be reduced to a three-game series, it should be deeper into the summer as Konerko noted.
What if the Cubs and White Sox were the last series to be played before the All-Star break? And not just Cubs/Sox, how about all the interleague rivalries?
These match-ups should lead us right into the All-Star break.
Besides, the last week or so of the half is like the last two weeks of school. It’s like, “whatever, let’s get to break already.”
If it remains a six-game series, move the first meeting from May to June while moving the second meeting to July – just before the break. The meetings just shouldn’t start that soon.
Nonetheless, on Monday, the White Sox and Cubs begin the second and final meeting of the season. The Sox swept the Cubs at Wrigley last month.
The White Sox need to win one more game to clinch the BP Cup, but I’m sure the team and its fans want to do more than win only one game.
