Series Preview: Cubs vs. Marlins

The Cubs came out of the All-Star Break firing on all fronts as they outscored the Arizona Diamondbacks 15-3. It was a series that featured a career-day for Soriano, another scoreless win for Ryan Dempster and a team that is just plain fun to watch. The Cubs will play host to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday for three games before spending a lot of time with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates (the Cubs play both teams in six games over the next two weeks). The trade deadline is looming; who will still be a Cub for the second half of the season? Midway Madness will keep you posted.

Probable Starters

Game 1 (7:05 p.m CT)

Travis Wood (4-3, 3.03 ERA) vs. Anibal Sanchez (4-6, 4.12 ERA)

Game 2 (7:05 p.m. CT)

Jeff Samardzija (6-8, 4.71 ERA) vs. Josh Johnson (5-6, 4.28 ERA)
Game 3 (1:20 p.m CT)

Paul Maholm (7-6, 4.33 ERA) vs. Mark Buehrle (9-8, 3.13 ERA)

Series Studs

CHC: Ryan Dempster (6 IP, 0 ER, 5 SO)

  • With his six innings of scoreless work against the Diamondbacks, Dempster has now tossed 33 consecutive scoreless innings, dating back to May 30. During that run, his ERA has dropped down to 1.86, which is the lowest in all of baseball. As the trade deadline approaches two weeks from Tuesday, one has to wonder how much longer Dempster will be wearing a Cubs uniform.

MIA (series in progress): Carlos Lee (4-11, 1 RBI)

Series Duds:

CHC: Starlin Castro (1-12, 1 SO)

  • The All-Star Castro hasn’t made his way back from Kansas City yet. In the first series since his second All-Star appearance, Castro only managed to get one hit. Maybe another day off before Miami comes to town will help Castro relax and find his All-Star groove.

MIA (series in progress): Omar Infante (1-11, 7 LOB)
