The Big Ten may not have a team in the BCS rankings this week, but they do have five teams ranked in the first polls of the 2012-2013 Men’s Basketball season. Although the football hasn’t lived up to expectations, there’s plenty of hope for better basketball; especially in Indiana.
The Hoosiers are the No. 1 ranked team in the country and will look to dethrone a Kentucky team they went 1-1 against last season. Indiana put its program back in the national spotlight with an upset over then No. 1 Kentucky last year but lost to the Wildcats in the Sweet 16 of the previous NCAA Tournament.
Joining the Hoosiers in the top five of the rankings are No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Michigan. The Buckeyes or Wolverines could possibly be ranked higher as the season progresses. It will be interesting to see the matchup between these two teams in an already fiercely contested rivalry.
Ranked 14th in the polls this season is Michigan State. The Spartans are coming off a solid season in which they won the conference tournament before bowing out to Louisville in the Sweet 16. Wisconsin rounds out the ranked teams for the Big Ten at No. 21.
Wisconsin also lost its Sweet 16 game after an impressive season. The Badgers could be a dark horse this upcoming season as they’ve got one of the more experienced teams in the Big Ten. The national attention will be on this conference early in the season and with Kentucky hoping for a repeat, any of these aforementioned teams could dethrone the Wildcats.
This could turn into a wildly unpredictable season in college basketball. The Big Ten hasn’t been this depth in quality teams in quite some time, luckily for the fans this will help them forgot about a forgettable football season.
