According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Chicago Cubs had reached a deal with Anibal Sanchez. That was Thursday evening. Then things got crazy. Many believe that Sanchez’s agent leaked that rumor to start a bidding war between the Cubs and Tigers. Friday morning the Tigers won that bidding war.
According to Nightengale, who despite originally getting the story wrong we still trust, the Cubs offered a 5 year $77 million deal. That is when the Tigers jumped up to get Sanchez back by offering him a 5 year $80 million deal.
Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer had Sanchez in Boston before shipping him to Miami in a deal that sent Josh Beckett to the Red Sox. The last time they went after a guy they had in their minor league system, it turned out well (Rizzo). Too bad they couldn’t land Sanchez as the ace of the Cubs pitching staff.
