Unstoppable Blackhawks Defeat Avalanche

Chicago Blackhawks v Carolina HurricanesEach day that passes, and each game the Blackhawks win, the target on their backs grows slightly larger. Every team in the Western Conference wants to be credited with taking down this hockey juggernaut, and the Colorado Avalanche are no exception.

The Blackhawks haven’t been completely healthy during their historic run. Dave Bolland made his return last night after missing five games, Michael Frolik has been sidelined with the flu, Daniel Carcillo was out for an extended period of time with a leg injury, and Corey Crawford has been suffering with an on-again off-again undisclosed upper body injury. The Hawks seemed to have overcome all of the aforementioned obstacles with easy, but the unexpected late scratch of Marian Hossa visibly hindered the team’s performance.

The Blackhawks opened the scoring on the power play. A quick pass from Brandon Saad to Brent Seabrook resulted in an absolute rocket launched at Semyon Varlamov, which was redirected by Andrew Shaw for the goal. However a 135k assist from Ryan O’Reilley to John Mitchell found the back of Ray Emery’s net with less than two minutes remaining in the frame (credit @2ndCityHockey).

Second period was all Patrick Sharp. The Sharp Shooter had four point blank shots on goal, and was denied by Varlamov every time. Matt Duchene put the Avs up by one halfway through the frame.

Third period was full of all kinds of woes. Andrew Shaw, who was shaken up in the second period, did not return to the game, and Patrick Sharp left about 7minutes into the period with an apparent wrist (?) injury.

However, like the little train that could, the Blackhawks kept attacking. Despite dressing seven defensemen, the Blackhawks had stellar opportunities with miss-matched lines and double-shifting forwards. Captain “No Pressure” Serious scored the equalizer on a shorthanded breakaway by driving Dave Bolland’s backpass right into Varlamov’s kitchen.

The boo birds were loud and plentiful when it was announced that Daniel “Gorilla Salad” Carcillo would be replacing Hossa on the top line, but the scrappy forward silenced the haters by scoring the game winning goal with less than one minute remaining in regulation. The Blackhawks now have 13 different players with game winners in this streak.

The Blackhawks played their fifth game in seven days on Wednesday night, and tied and won that game against a very hungry Avalanche squad without key players in the lineup. In the midst of a historic point streak, a game like this one reaffirms the depth of this squad, and makes it impossible to imagine this team losing a playoff series.
